Craniosacral Therapy and Spirituality: Listening Beneath the Surface

touching the hand of god

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that supports a dysregulated nervous system, releases tension in the jaw (TMJ), works with the deeper rhythms of the craniosacral system, releasing structural tension, fluid restrictions, fascia, and all the anatomical components that make up the body. It goes much deeper than that. There is something less easily explained, but just as present and far more subtle than the physical body.

It is the softest of touches that allows a craniosacral therapist to sense the true nature of a person. At times, it can feel like diving into the depths of the ocean. I remember one of my tutors saying that you can reach a point where you are diving so deeply into another person’s ocean that it feels as though you might lose yourself. And at that point, to go deeper, because you will not lose yourself, but something profound can happen there.

This is often where people begin to experience craniosacral therapy differently. Not only as a physical treatment, but as something that touches a deeper layer, something that might be described, gently, as the soul or essence. Many people feel truly seen and heard in these moments, and sometimes, that alone is enough to create change.

It often arises in the moment the body genuinely softens and begins to let go. The fluid restrictions ease, space opens, and there is a sense of something becoming quieter and more expansive. In this stillness, people may become aware of sensations, emotions, or internal states that were previously held beneath the surface.

This is not something created by the practitioner. It emerges naturally when the body feels safe enough to settle when boundaries soften, and awareness begins to widen.

People can leave a session unsure of how to describe what has happened, yet feeling clearer, lighter, and more understood. Often, there is a deeper connection to the body, to the breath, and to a quieter internal awareness, something that could be described as presence, or for some, spirituality.

Craniosacral therapy does not define this experience. It simply creates the conditions in which it can arise, gently, naturally and harmoniously.

This depth is not present in every session. I feel deeply grateful to have witnessed and experienced it a handful of times throughout my work. When it does happen, it is incredibly humbling and something I hold with a great deal of respect.

To be a craniosacral therapist, it sometimes feels as though we are touching something close to the essence of shamanism, a quiet presence that moves deep beneath the surface, like the spirit or essence of water and space, of life itself.

For me, craniosacral therapy not only offers a gentle, holistic approach to supporting the nervous system, releasing TMJ and jaw tension, but also reconnects with the body on a deeper level. But touches on the essence of shamanism and the spirit of water.
