Nervous System Healing Through a Spiritual Lens: Could the Vagus Nerve Be the Missing Key

Over the past few years, the nervous system has become a central focus in the health and wellness world. We are learning more about the effects of chronic stress, trauma, overwhelm, and how these experiences shape the way we think, feel, and move through life. Terms such as nervous system regulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and somatic healing are becoming increasingly common, and for good reason.

Yet while science is beginning to uncover the profound intelligence of the nervous system, many esoteric and spiritual traditions have long understood a deeper truth: healing is not simply about fixing symptoms. It is about returning to wholeness, to a remembrance of our innate completeness. What may begin as a mental understanding, “I am whole and complete”, gradually becomes embodied, transforming from a thought into a lived experience and felt sense within the body.

From a spiritual perspective, nervous system healing is not merely the process of reducing stress or calming anxiety. It is a journey of coming home fully and completely to yourself. It is learning to feel safe within your body, to trust life more deeply, and to become fully present with what is. As the nervous system begins to regulate, many people discover a deeper connection to the wisdom behind the ancient saying, "Life will take care of itself if you leave it alone." What once seemed like a concept becomes a lived truth. Beneath the fears, striving, and protective patterns of the self, there is often a growing sense of trust, connection, and alignment with something greater than ourselves.

At the centre of this journey sits one of the most remarkable structures in the human body, the vagus nerve.

The Vagus Nerve: The Bridge Between Body, Mind, and Spirit

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, extending from the brainstem through the face, throat, heart, lungs, digestive organs, and beyond.

Often referred to as the "wandering nerve," it acts as a communication highway between the brain and the body, constantly sending information in both directions.

Physiologically, the vagus nerve plays a major role in:

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Heart rate and heart rate variability

  • Digestion and gut health

  • Breathing patterns

  • Emotional regulation

  • Sleep quality

  • Immune function

  • and overall well-being

When the vagus nerve is functioning well, the body can shift more easily into a parasympathetic state often called "rest, digest, and heal."

From a spiritual perspective, the vagus nerve can be one of the bridges between our physical experience and our capacity to feel connected, grounded, and fully present.

When Survival Becomes a Way of Life

Many people unknowingly spend years living in a state of survival.

The body remains alert.
The jaw remains clenched.
The shoulders remain lifted.
The mind is constantly active

Even when life appears calm externally, the nervous system may still be carrying old protective patterns. which can create a feeling of separation/duality.

We may feel disconnected from our intuition, our inner wisdom, our joy, our creativity, and even our sense of purpose.

The nervous system is not broken when this happens. It is simply doing what it was designed to do: protect. True healing begins when we stop fighting the body and start listening to its wisdom and needs.

Safety: The Foundation of Spiritual Growth

Many spiritual teachings encourage us to expand our consciousness, open our hearts, and deepen our awareness. However, in my own experience, true spiritual growth and openings rarely happen through force. It happens through allowing, softening and feeling safe in the body.

A dysregulated nervous system struggles to access stillness, presence, and connection because its primary focus is survival. As we slowly learn to practice and create safety within ourselves, the body no longer has to work hard to protect us. The vagus nerve begins to support a deeper state of regulation, and what was once hidden beneath stress and tension can finally start to reveal itself:

The mind becomes quieter.
The breath deepens.
The body slowly opens up like a flower meeting the morning sun.

And in that softening, many people begin to experience a greater connection to themselves and to life, and the noise begins to slowly drop away.

The Vagus Nerve and the Voice of the Soul

One of the most fascinating aspects of the vagus nerve is its connection to the throat, voice, facial expression, and social engagement system.

The vagus nerve influences our ability to:

  • Speak our truth

  • Express emotions

  • Connect with others

  • Feel seen and understood

Many people carry years of unspoken words, suppressed emotions, and unmet needs within the jaw, the tongue, and the fascia.

From a spiritual perspective, healing the vagus nerve can become an act of reclaiming authentic expression and sovereignty.

The more regulated the nervous system becomes, the easier it is to communicate honestly, establish healthy boundaries for ourselves, and live in alignment with our deeper truth.

Spiritual Practices That Support Vagus Nerve Healing

The beautiful thing about vagus nerve healing is that it often involves simple, gentle practices.

Some of the most effective include:

Conscious Breathing - Slow, diaphragmatic breathing signals safety to the nervous system and stimulates the vagus nerve and massages the heart and organs.

Meditation and Presence - Stillness helps create space between thoughts and allows awareness to settle into the body.

Humming, Chanting, and Singing - The vagus nerve passes through the throat and vocal structures. Gentle vocalisation can stimulate vagal activity and encourage regulation.

Craniosacral Therapy - Craniosacral therapy supports the nervous system through gentle touch, helping the body release tension and move toward a state of greater balance and regulation.

TMJ therapy - TMJ therapy can gently release long-held tension within the jaw and surrounding cranial structures, creating more space, ease, and freedom for the vagus nerve

Tree Roots

Nature Connection - Spending time in nature naturally supports nervous system regulation and reminds us of our connection to something larger than ourselves.

Gratitude and self-compassion - Practices that cultivate positive emotional states can improve vagal tone and support emotional resilience.

Healing Is a Return

Perhaps the most profound spiritual understanding of nervous system healing is this:

Healing is not becoming someone new. It is opening up to who you were, have been, and are. Many people witness this as feeling like themselves again. The childhood version of themselves that was free, fun, loving, full of life, before conditioning occurred.

It is remembering who you were before fear, stress, and survival patterns became your normal.

The vagus nerve is not a magical cure, but it is one of the body's greatest allies in this process.

As we support the vagus nerve, regulate the nervous system, and cultivate safety within ourselves, we create the conditions for deeper insight to emerge.

And often, what we discover beneath the tension, anxiety, and overwhelm is not emptiness.

It is presence.

It is peace.

It is the quiet recognition that we were never truly disconnected from ourselves in the first place; we just lost sight of it.

Supporting Your Nervous System Naturally

If you are exploring nervous system healing, vagus nerve stimulation, craniosacral therapy, or holistic approaches to wellbeing, remember that healing rarely happens through force.

It happens through safety.
It happens through connection.
It happens through learning to listen to the wisdom of your own body.

Healing is rarely linear. It is usually circular. We revisit familiar places, emotions, and experiences, each time with a little more awareness, compassion, and capacity, before it becomes just a thought without any feeling or emotion attached to it. Just an expression and pattern.

Sometimes, the greatest spiritual practice is not striving, fixing, or becoming. It is simply allowing yourself to soften. To cry. To feel. To let go and be held by life.

As we support the nervous system and nurture the vagus nerve, we create the conditions for deeper healing to unfold naturally.

If you would like to learn practical, evidence-informed tools to regulate your nervous system, improve vagal tone, and cultivate greater calm, resilience, and wellbeing, I warmly invite you to explore my Vagus Nerve Mastery Course.
